What gets deducted from a Korean salary
Korean payslips (급여명세서) usually show six deductions. Four are social insurance (4대보험) and two are taxes.
| Deduction | Korean | Employee share (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| National Pension | 국민연금 | 4.75% (total 9.5%) |
| National Health Insurance | 건강보험 | 3.595% (total 7.19%) |
| Long-term Care Insurance | 장기요양보험 | about 13.14% of your health insurance premium |
| Employment Insurance | 고용보험 | 0.9% (total 1.8%) |
| Income tax | 소득세 | progressive, 6%–45% of taxable income |
| Local income tax | 지방소득세 | 10% of your income tax |
Your employer pays the same amount again for pension, health, long-term care and employment insurance, plus all of the industrial accident insurance (산재보험). Those employer payments do not come out of your salary.
How this calculator works
- Insurance base: monthly salary minus tax-free allowances.
- National Pension is 4.75% of that base, but the base is capped. From July 2026 to June 2027 the base is at least ₩410,000 and at most ₩6,590,000 a month, so the most you pay is ₩313,020.
- Long-term care = health insurance premium × 0.9448 ÷ 7.19.
- Amounts under 10 won are dropped, as on real payslips.
- Income tax is worked out for the whole year: earned income deduction, ₩1,500,000 per person you support, your pension and insurance premiums, the 2026 tax brackets, the earned income tax credit and the ₩130,000 standard tax credit. The result is divided by 12. Child tax credits and other personal deductions are not included.
Notes for foreign workers
- National Pension: whether you pay depends on your country's agreement with Korea and your visa. Some people can claim a lump-sum refund (반환일시금) when they leave Korea. Check with the National Pension Service.
- Employment Insurance: mandatory for some visas (for example F-2, F-5, F-6, E-9) and optional for many others.
- Flat tax option: some foreign employees can choose a flat income tax rate instead of the regular progressive rate. This calculator uses the regular rate. Ask your employer if the flat rate applies to you.
